If you’ve ever driven from Ystradgynlais towards Dan yr Ogof Caves you will have noticed a broken and craggy ridge that some say, and I must admit it really does, look like the reclining torso and head of a giant. This is The Sleeping Giant.
Composed of Carboniferous Limestone and Twrch Sandstone, the highly folded limestone beds make up the Cribarth Disturbance and it is this limestone pavement and are of shake and sink holes that attracted industry during the 19th century when the hill was quarried. Prior to that we have Bronze Age use of the mountain and two cairns as well as a trig point adorning the tops. What I’m saying is that this is one interesting hill to walk and explore 🙂
