Having been a beach lifeguard qualified outdoor instructor, one of a very small group of elite coasteering providers, I have some interest in beach lifeguarding, and to be absolutely clear, I am dismayed by the provision of what should be blanket coverage of the popular beach locations in the UK.

There are plenty of volunteers and qualified beach life guards. If you live by the ocean, for a good few, it’s what you do as a teen and young adult.

Why then was there no provision at Easter in the fine weather that we had then and why is there STILL no lifeguarding cover at popular locations now?

The image was taken Saturday 26th June 2pm at Southerndown, one of the most popular beaches in Wales.

There will be drownings, it what the sea does, but I assert that a good few of those that will drown will do so because of the lack of life guarding services.
