Our 'Sunset on Pen y Fan' guided hike is a 6km walk with 460m of ascent and is over well-made paths. Pen y Fan is the highest mountain in South Wales with views to Devon and Somerset to the South and to Cadair Idris to the North, in clear weather of course!

Pen y Fan Hiking Route

You will be safely guided to the summit in time for, hopefully, a spectacular sunset over the Black Mountain to the West and the Black Mountains to the East. This walk is 9km and has 460m of ascent... You have been warned ;)

Following the Taff up to its source, a route we'll have to ourselves, some may get wet feet, so good boots are a must. Then it's the steep climb to Corn Du and onto Pen y Fan, taking in the views, seeking out the fossil beach, and getting some fine Instagram-worthy snaps.

It's then off-piste once again, and we'll have the mountain to ourselves as we hilariously slide down steep slopes on our backsides. This is a truly hysterical experience! We'll explore Llyn Cwm Llwch and discuss its mysteries before heading up to the sad memorial of Tommy Jones, where Andy will relay the true facts of this case.

Pen y Fan can become very crowded indeed. However, the paths we will take for most of the day are used by no others, and if midweek, we'll have much of the hike to ourselves!

A final mountain, Yr Gyrn, is peak bagged as we descend to the start point.

Useful Brecon Beacons Guided Hike Information

Andy will likely be your leader for this guided hike in Wales. He is a Mountain Leader and a Green Badged Tourist Guide, an ambassador for many areas of Wales and a Visit Wales Pro, he’s also been chair of Brecon Beacons Tourism and a Brecon Beacons National Park Warden.

Know before you go:

  • The sun sets at a different time every day! We will need to meet at Pont ar Daf car park at the foot of Pen y Fan two hours prior to sunset. This allows for a little wiggle room and to either just 'go for it' or to be able to take an interesting 'off the beaten track' route to the summit.

  • We may be able to provide transport from Cardiff or some other South Wales locations. Please inquire about options and costs.

  • This tour will take place rain or shine

  • You will climb 600m, but this is, in the main, gently done

  • Andy may bring his dog with him. Britain is generally known as a nation of dog lovers, you might meet owners walking on and off lead dogs in the countryside.

  • Although most levels of fitness can be accommodated, please be sensible when booking and know your own ability

Please Note

A good level of fitness is required for all of our mountain walks. If walking with us, please know that the weather can change, and at times we do need to keep moving, especially in winter, to remain warm and safe.
